La Venexiana

« back

This ensemble has worked out a new style of performing early Italian music – a combination of declamation colored with rhetorical musical figures, and a refined harmonic sense. Alluding to the stylistic language of a Renaissance comedy of unknown authorship entitled La Venexiana – from which it took its name – the ensemble sets itself the aim of dramatizing its musical interpretations, while paying attention to the linguistic subtleties in the texts being performed, with particular emphasis on the contrast between the spheres of the sacred and profane – the refined and the commonplace. Since 1998, the ensemble has been associated on an ongoing basis with the Glossa label. The Il Madrigale Italiano collection of recordings (C. Monteverdi, L. Luzzaschi, L. Marenzio, S. d’India, G. de Wert) garnered numerous awards: the Prix Caecilia (1999), Premio Fondazione Cini and Amadeus (2000), Gramophone Award (2001), Cannes Classical Award (2002), Grand Prix du Disque Académie Charles Cros (2003) and Deutsche Schallplattenkritik (2005, 2006). The ensemble’s latest artistic undertakings were two big tours. In the 2007/08 season, La Venexiana prepared a staging of C. Monteverdi’s Ballo delle Ingrate and the show Era la Notte (producer Paola Reggiani), which were presented at the Festival van Vlaanderen, at the Monteverdi Festival in Cremona, in Hamburg, at the Teatro Real in Madrid and at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. The following season brought a raft of successes associated with performances of C. Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in London, Ratisbon, Lyon, Weingarten, Jerez de la Frontera, Udine, Modena, St. Gallen, Viterbo, Eilat, Seattle etc. The ensemble has also made recordings of this work which have attracted widespread acclaim and received important prizes: Choc du Monde de la Musique, BBC Radio 3 Building a Library – First Choice (L’Orfeo – November 2007), Gramophone Editor’s Choice and Gramophone Award.
