15th Misteria Paschalia Festival – it’s time for British Islands!
Add date: Tuesday, 7 November 2017

Two concerts series, eight days filled with Renaissance and Baroque music, thirteen concerts, plenty of Polish flavours, three world premieres, two Polish ones, and as many as seven commissions by the festival. These figures are impressive, but the festival is not about the numbers, but the emotional musical and cultural experience. The 15th edition of one of the most recognisable European early music festivals will offer innumerable opportunities to experience emotions hidden within music. Krakow in the week between 26 March and 2 April 2018 is not to be missed!

The 14th edition of the Misteria Paschalia Festival has come to an end. What was it like to experience this eight-day adventure with the French feeling of music? It was certainly full of respect for the presented pieces and insightful views on the works from broad historical and aesthetic perspectives, with performances oriented at conveying the composer’s intention. The first ever national-themed edition of the Festival – devoted to French music – was an opportunity to present the grand works of French masters in the art of sound that were unknown in Poland, but also to meet the most outstanding French artists – their sensitivity, class, elegance, natural musicality and perfect understanding of the complexity of early music and its historically informed performance.

The foreign media had been interested in the Misteria Paschalia Festival long before the kickoff of this year’s 14th edition. The first text fully devoted to the Festival, and announcing its programme, appeared in late March in British "Catholic Herald". The author and a frequent guest at our Festival, Peter Quantrill, wrote: "For these seven days the city becomes an Oxford Circus of the early music world. [...] The churches and concert halls are packed, the audience diverse, hungry and informed."

Impressive virtuosity and the joy of music-making
Add date: Tuesday, 18 April 2017

The finale of the 14th Misteria Paschalia Festival on Easter Monday was a spectacular show in which vocal and instrumental mastery met cheerful musicality and the sense of humour. The phenomenal Korean countertenor, David DQ Lee, was the star of that night at the ICE Krakow Congress Centre, full of impressive musical effects. He was accompanied by marvellous Ensemble Matheus, energetically conducted by Jean-Christophe Spinosi. Instrumental concerto soloists were: flutists Alexis Kossenko and Jean-Marc Goujon, and violinists Laurence Paugam and Spinosi himself. The programme Arie e concerti consisted of works by George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi and Georg Philipp Telemann. The programme gave us the insight into the diversity of the most exuberant Italian style of music and allowed to sense the atmosphere of the world of castrates who were true celebrities in 18th-century Europe.
